New windows

The first thing we did to the farmhouse was to add new windows. The windows that were in the house were not all alike. The person who built the house must have known someone who had access to a bunch of windows. The windows were different shapes and sizes and none of them were air tight. When the wind would blow I could feel air coming in everywhere around the windows. So it just made since to start by replacing all of the windows before we did anything else.

We started with the windows on the side of the house. What I thought was going to be a simple job turned out to be a big headache. When the windows were originally installed it was a wood siding house. Years later the house was bricked and the brick mason put the brick over the edge of the windows making it very hard and time consuming to get the old glass out. After several hours of fighting off wasp nest and a lot of broken glass we finally got the old windows out and the new ones in.

The other windows were located on the wood part of the house and they were much easier to get out. My grandson, Aiden was a big help to me. Although he is only 7 he really was a big help. He handed me tools and held the new windows in place so I could get the screws in them. 

Now that the new windows are in you can feel the difference. No more air blowing straight through. They are not complete yet but they look a lot better. Aiden said it was time for a break so we pulled up a chair and ate a snack and relaxed for a while.
